‘We’re all born naked and the rest is drag’ –RuPaul Charles

Gender is a spectrum, a paint pot of millions of different colours and combinations. Each person’s gender is unique to them, even if it is very similar to someone else’s. These endless possibilities and combinations mean that gender is fluid; whether that be a person’s identity, or society’s ever-changing view of gender and gender roles. Everyone experiences gender differently, and throughout the last 50 years, drag has helped questioning or uncertain people break away from the assigned binary of male and female. Every day we perform our gender, be that consciously or subconsciously, and I wanted to capture how different that makes each of us, in this series. I, myself identify as a non-binary trans man, as I do not fit into society’s expectation of a ‘man’. This lived experience outside of the binary is why I wanted to create this series; to explain and educate others about the gender spectrum, as well as to add positive representation for non-binary and transgender individuals, something that the mainstream media has been lacking recently.
